Venice expected exceptional tidal peaks: closed kindergartens and schools

November 12th, 2019|News|

After a meeting in the Prefecture of Venice to take stock of the situation on the exceptional high water forecasts that will affect the historic center of Venice in the coming days, the Municipality of Venice has released the data relating to today, Tuesday 12 November. The tidal peak this morning reached 127 cm at Punta della Salute.

Another tidal peak is expected at 11 pm, with a forecast that from 145 centimeters could reach up to 155 centimetersthus revealing itself even higher than that of October 29, 2018. On Wednesday November 13, the tide will rise again to 145 centimeters at 10.30.

The City then recalled that the prepared walkways do not guarantee transitability in the event of a tide of more than 120 centimeters and, therefore, recommended the population to go out at the times indicated above only in case of extreme necessity. Similarly, some vaporetto landing stages could be impassable in coincidence with the tidal peak. The ACTV company may suspend the public transport service during 12 and 13 November.

As for the boats, the City of Venice recommends keeping a moderate and adequate speed to the circumstance and remembers that, in the case of water over 120 centimeters, only the Grand Canal, the Cannaregio Canal, and the Rio Novo can be used, and for emergency and emergency vehicles only also the Galeazze Channel. Finally, the Municipality of Venice, in agreement with the Territorial School Office, established the suspension of teaching activities , on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 November, in nursery schools and kindergartens located in the historic center and in the islands, while it will be regular at the Lido, Pellestrina and the mainland.

Public utility services (Actv, Veritas, Italgas and Enel Energia) were alerted, which ensured the availability of emergency response teams. Additional vessels will be made available for connection with the islands of Burano and Pellestrina for urgent rescue operations. For emergency calls the municipality invites citizens to use the number 115 .
