Following the fruitful session on communicating forecast uncertainty at the Project Meeting held in Bari during June 2019, the City of Venice will organize a more in depth workshop on “Communicating uncertainty of weather-marine forecast”. Since Open I-STORMS will soon disseminate forecasts to the general public, it is imperative to define as soon as possible the most efficient method of communicating forecast uncertainty. It is also clear that the correct communication of the uncertainty is crucial in order to correctly communicate the coastal risk caused by sea storms, and hence to improve the early warning systems and civil protection procedures, being the latter one of the main Project’s outputs.
The workshop will bring together modelers, forecasters, Civil Protection managers (at local and National level), decision makers, as well as communication experts. The aim is to jointly identify the most efficient method of communicating forecast uncertainty to the general public, to be possibly tested in the Open I-STORMS.
After the completion of the morning session on uncertainty, a second session will follow in the afternoon on the Integrated Web System (IWS), where an operational training on the new interoperable web system will be led by the developers of CNR-ISMAR. The session is really important for understanding all system resources and for becoming independent users.
The venue of both sessions is Palazzo Franchetti, S. Marco 2847, 30124 Venice (Italy).
