Integrated Sea sTORm Management Strategies

The transnational project, I-STORMS, which is funded by the lnterreg V-B Adriatic-Ionian Programme, aims at improving early warning and civil protection procedures to safeguard the Adriatic-Ionian area from sea storms.

Within the I-STORMS context, some very important ICT Tools have been developed, including the Common Data Sharing Web GiS Tool (Integrated Web System – IWS), an online tool, collecting observation datasets and forecasts from the existing operational forecast systems.

Moreover, the I-STORMS Mobile Application offers to the general public access to the IWS, providing to the users, sea level and waves forecasts, as well as alerts.

Given the recent high water that devastated Venice this month, flooding streets, houses. squares and monuments of cultural heritage, the importance of the I-STORMS Project is more prominent than ever, raising social awareness about climate change and the need for an integrated approach.

THE I-STORMS WEB INTEGRATED SYSTEM (IWS)

In order to address the territorial challenges related to sea storms effects on the coastal areas, the I-STORMS project has developed a shared and interoperable system, the I-STORMS Web Integrated System (IWS), to allow a better exchange of information among partners and stakeholders in the Adriatic-Ionian area.

THE I-STORMS MOBILE APPLICATION

The I-STORMS Mobile Application allows the Web Integrated System data to be explored by non-experts over the smart-phone. In particular, it makes the observations of sea level, waves height, waves direction and waves period available for specific locations of interest. The app gives also access to the sea level and waves forecasts.

WORKSHOP “COMMUNICATING THE UNCERTAINTY OF WEATHER AND MARINE FORECASTS”

The I-STORMS workshop “Communicating the uncertainty of weather and marine forecasts”, was organized on the 28th of October 2019, at Palazzo Franchetti, by the Project’s Lead Partner, the City of Venice.

I-STORMS NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN SLOVENIA

The Slovenian Environmental Agency (ARSO) organised a National Conference for Slovenian stakeholders of the I-STORMS Project in Koper, on November 15, 2019. At the Conference, the achievements of the Project were presented, as well as the work of ARSO on forecasting the state of the sea and the weather on the coast.

EVENT VIDEO – REMTECH EXPO – COSTA 2019

On the occasion of the I-STORMS Project’s results presentation at the Remtech Expo in Ferrara on the 20th of September and the Civil Protection Exercise “Costa 2019”, the first regional and national simulation on storm surge risk, a Documentary Video has been created.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

27 – 28 November 2019 • Piraeus

I-STORMS Final Conference and 3rd Transnational Network Conference

The I-STORMS Final Conference, organised by the Regional Union of Municipalities of Epirus, will take place on the 27th of November 2019, in Piraeus and it will be followed by the the Project’s 3rd Transnational Network Conference and Project Meeting, on the 28th of November 2019, also in Piraeus. The Venue for both Conferences is the Piraeus Theoxenia Hotel.
